A new scholarship from the Walla Walla chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) aims to support women pursuing careers in the trades at Walla Walla Community College (WWCC).
Women make up about 15-25% of WWCC’s welding students, and they are now eligible for this scholarship, which is part of AAUW’s long-standing commitment to funding women’s education. Since 2016, the group has awarded over $125,000 in scholarships.
The new trades scholarship was created in response to growing interest in trade careers. The AAUW hopes to award 25-30 scholarships of $3,000 each, depending on applications. Students can apply through the Blue Mountain Community Foundation’s common application by March 10, and funds can be used for tuition, gear, or other expenses.
WWCC welding instructor Kris Margart emphasized the high demand for skilled trades and the strong job opportunities for graduates, with some earning up to $50 per hour. Female students like Jaquelin Sanchez and Jill Lopez shared their positive experiences in the program, highlighting the welcoming environment and strong career prospects.
