Information About This Class: Psychology 100 is an introductory course to the whole field of psychology, a social science that studies the behavior and mental processes of human beings. The course is divided into six units, each of which will focus on one major area of psychology. The order of the topics is intended to be cumulative therefore in order to understand the later units you must keep up with the reading assignments. Additional Information: 1. The reading assignments are listed on the course calendar by week. The student is expected to keep up with the readings as well as lecture material. 2. There will be 4 tests throughout the quarter, each worth 50 points. The lowest test score will not be calculated into your final grade. If you miss a test, for whatever reason, that is the test score (0 points) that will be dropped. Exceptions or rescheduling of a test will be limited and must be discussed with the instructor ahead of the scheduled test time. Test dates identified are approximates and may be adjusted by the instructor based on the needs of the class. Tests are based on lecture information as well as the textbook information. The instructor may not lecture over the entire textbook, but the student is responsible for the information for the tests. 3. The final is worth 75 points and can not be missed. Rescheduling of the final must be arranged through the Dean of Instruction and the Instructor within a reasonable time period (before the scheduled final. If you miss the final, you receive an F for the class). *4. The student will be required to critique an existing work of research and write a term paper using the APA style of writing. 5. At the discretion of the Instructor, completion of additional assignments may be required. 6. Attendance and quality of participation will make up 10% of the final grade for the class. You are allowed 4 absences before attendance points are deducted from the final grade. Attentiveness and appropriate behavior are included in the points. Refer to the Student Handbook page 26-28 for behavioral expectations. Additionally, sleeping during class, completing work for classes other than psychology, reading information other than the psychology text, excessive lateness, disruptive behavior and participation in side conversations, computer activity other than note-taking for the class, texting and cell-phone use are all considered reasons for point deductions and consequences as outlined in the Student Handbook. 7. The student can earn up to 10 points extra credit by completion of additional assignments that evolve throughout the quarter. 8. There is a traditional grading scale: (Note:The scale will be adjusted to accommodate Additional 5 point assignments at the discretion of the instructor). 3 Tests @ 50 points each = 150 points Final @ 75 points= 75 points Attendance 35 points= 35 points 260 points Point Values: 90%-100% 234-260 =A. 80%-89% 208-233 =B 70%-79% 182-207 =C 60%-69% 156-181 =D Below 60% under156 =F * (Term Paper-35 points: requirement varies by quarter and will change above scale) 9.
