COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to help you in three ways: 1) to discover how human behavior affects workplace relationships and job satisfaction, 2) to learn or review habits and attitudes required to keep a job, and (3) to develop skills that will make learning easier while you are in college and on the job. OBJECTIVES Understand how personality type, processing style, and interest affect job satisfaction and learning. Using several inventories, you will learn more about your personality type, about how you process information, and about your interests. You will discover how this information can help you while you are a student and in present and future work situations. Develop effective learning skills for memory, concentration, time management, reading, and exam preparation. By learning how your brain learns and remembers, you will improve your ability to concentrate and remember things. You will be introduced to principles of effective time management and given opportunities to apply them. Using texts from your other classes, you will apply a textbook reading process to help you read more effectively. Learning how to use study tools and tips for taking exams will assist you with tests in all your classes as well during on-the-job training. Demonstrate an awareness of group dynamics and conflict resolution in the workplace. Your work success depends as much on your relationships with co-workers and supervisors as it does on technical knowledge and skills. You will learn about developing good relationships and about how to repair injured relationships. Understand the concept of self and how it relates to a persons perceptions, attitudes, behavior and success in education and career development. You will discover how self-esteem affects self-confidence, how self-confidence affects learning and human relations, and how human relations affect job satisfaction and job performance. Develop an awareness of human perception of reality as influenced by attitudes, cultures, and expectations. You will have opportunities to examine how your attitudes, your cultural background, and the expectations of others influence your experiences and human relations. Initiate a student portfolio. You will take the first step in creating a portfolio of information about yourself to be used for degree completion and during your job search. STUDENT OBLIGATIONS Attend class. Attendance and punctuality count in determining your grade for two important reasons: 1)Employers value attendance and punctuality.(See chapter 16 in YOUR ATTITUTDE IS SHOWING.) 2)Research shows that students who attend class regularly make the best grades. You earn 5 points per day for attendance when you arrive punctually. Two points will be deducted each day you arrive late. Purchase materials. An interesting and thought-provoking text and exercise guide were selected to provide information, case studies, and self-evaluation activities. YOUR ATTITUTDE IS SHOWING: A PRIMER OF HUMAN RELATIONS, 10TH Edition, and SELF-PACED EXERCISE GUIDE are available in the bookstore. You will also need a 3-ring binder with rings at least one inch in diameter. Purchase 4 dividers and label them as follows: 1)Syllabus/Assignment Schedule, 2)Assignments, 3)Notes/Handouts, 4)Self-discovery activities. Complete assignments promptly. To receive full credit, assignments must be turned the day they are due. Late assignments receive only 70% of the points. 4.Create a positive classroom learning environment.
