Representative works offer the opportunity to study not only poetry, drama, and fiction but the modes of thought and feeling of ancient, medieval, and modern cultures. In eleven weeks well sample drama from the Greek and French stage, romance from medieval France, poetry from ancient China, and the short story from Russia. Youll learn to read closely and reflect on what you have read by taking an active part in class discussions, group activities, and individual assignments. Becoming an active participant in class discussions especially contributes to intellectual maturity. And responding to questions designed to challenge your ability to think coherently about what you have read, youll learn to more clearly articulate your observations. A Word about Careers: The following excerpt from X.J. Kennedys An Introduction to Poetry expresses the relevancy of literature for those who are not planning to teach or write professionally: Many, not planning to teach English and impatient to begin some other career, wonder if the study of (literature(, however enjoyable, isnt a waste of time--or at least, an annoying obstacle. This objection may seem reasonable at first glance, but it rests on a shaky assumption. Success in a career does not depend merely on learning the specialized information and skills required to join a profession. In most careers, according to one senior business executive, people often fail not because they dont understand their jobs, but because they dont understand their co-workers, their clients, or their customers. They dont ever see the world from another persons point of view. Their problem is a failure of the imagination. To leap over the wall of self, to look through anothers eyes--this is valuable experience, which literature offers. Course Objectives: demonstrate through exams, papers, and discussion an ability to read criticallyto understand the actual meaning of a passage plus its implications and significance present and clarify opinions and responses to reading through the use of textual evidence identify writers outside the Anglo/American literary tradition and characterize them by reference to their writing demonstrate an understanding of select literary terminology learn how to properly cite and document source material in literary papers create, support, and sustain a thesis in essay-response exam questions and short papers work collaboratively to achieve any of the above objectives Grades: The final grade will be determined by the total points earned from attendance/ participation, papers, and tests. Assignments: one out-of-class paper (100 pts), five tests (500 pts). Attendance/Participation: You can earn 100 pts by showing up to class every day. Each absence results in a 5-point reduction of the 100 possible participation points. (A 5-point reduction will also occur if it is evident that you are not prepared for class.) Up to four excused absences are allowed for either documented medical reasons or for taking part in a WWCC sponsored activity that happens to conflict with class time, a game here or away, for instance. If you are a student athlete, please make sure that your coach emails me a list of those student/athletes needing to be excused from class. Medical documentation should indicate that you were either hospitalized or following doctors orders and should be signed and dated by a nurse or a physician and include a contact phone extension. Appointments should not be scheduled for the same time slot as our class and will not be excused unless the appointment is absolutely necessary. Late Work: Late or make-up work will lose 10% for every day it is late. Exams can be made-up if a valid reason is given for the absence. Still, the make-up exam will lose 10% of its points. These exams must be made-up as soon as possible. If the absence is excused (see attendance/ Participation), you can make up the exam with no point loss. Plagiarism: You are expected to do your own work. If I determine that you have plagiarized the work of another, you will be dropped from the class or, if past the drop date, you will be given an F final grade. Cell Phones: The ringing of cell phones in class is strictly prohibited. Text-messaging is likewise prohibited. Arriving late to class also disrupts the learning environment. Please show courtesy towards me and your fellow students by turning off and putting away cell phones and coming to class on time. Last Day to Drop (and not incur a grade): November 9 Disabilities Accommodations: If you have a disability for which you may need accommodations contact Claudia Angus, our Disabilities Coordinator, in the Student Development Center, 527-4543, as soon as possible.
