To give students an opportunity of seeing how the wars affected the culture of the US and how many of those expressions are still with us today. To give students a sampling, not only of fictional works that came out of the wars, but nonfiction, poetry, short stories, and music as well. METHODS: In-depth study of eight works by authors who experienced combat in either WWI or WWII. In-class lectures and discussions of readings. Tests that call for critical evaluation. Occasional quizzes on reading assignments. One 5-7 page research paper, MLA style. CONTENTS: Students will be responsible for completing the following: 4 or 5 tests @ 100 points each 1 final comprehensive examination @ 100 points 1 5-7 page research paper, MLA style, @ 100 points Occasional quizzes (unannounced) @ 10 points each A ProQuest assignment @ 25 points GRADING: 95-100 = A } 90-94 = A-} 87-89 = B+} 84-86 = B } 80-83 = B-} represents percentage of 77-79 = C+} total points available 74-76 = C } 70-73 = C-} 65-69 = D+} 60-64 = D } Below 60 = F } Throughout the quarter, there may be opportunities for extra credit where appropriate, but students should not plan to rely on this. IN NO CASE WILL A STUDENT BE ALLOWED TO APPLY MORE THAN TEN (10) EXTRA CREDIT POINTS TO HIS/HER GRADE. MISSED TESTS/QUIZZES: Quizzes are given at unannounced times. They will be given at the beginning of the class period and may not be made up because of lateness or absence. If you come in late but before the time for the quiz is up, you may take the quiz within the remaining time available. You will not get an extension of time to complete the quiz because of lateness. Tests may not be made up except for extreme emergencies. An absence on a test day means that you will forfeit those points unless you have a verifiable emergency situation. IN NO CASE WILL ANY STUDENT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE UP MORE THAN ONE (1) MISSED TEST. ANY TEST TO BE MADE UP MUST BE DONE SO NO LATER THAN ONE (1) WEEK AFTER THE REGULARLY- SCHEDULED TEST. OTHERWISE, THE POINTS FOR THAT TEST WILL BE FORFEITED. ITS BEST TO STAY HEALTHY!! A word about the final exam: it will only be given at the time and on the day scheduled. Please make your vacation and work plans accordingly. If for some reason you are unable to be here, you will not be allowed to make up the final. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: See student manual, WWCC. Copying of quizzes or plagiarism on research papers will not be tolerated. RESEARCH PAPER: I encourage you to examine many different kinds of resources, not just those on the internet. NO MORE THAN TWO OF YOUR RESOURCES MAY BE FROM THE INTERNET. You will be turning in your first draft for editing and then get a chance to revise for a better grade. Please acquaint yourself with the MLA format for research papers by consulting the Purdue University OWL at: < http://owl.english.purdue.edu> See also separate handout on the research paper for further guidelines. CELL PHONES AND PAGERS: TURN THEM OFF!! Also, cell phones may NOT be used in the classroom, whether or not class is in session. This includes the use of a cell phone for sending or receiving text messages. Any student whose cell phone goes off during class, or who is using a cell phone in any way, will be penalized five (5) points for each offense. This also applies to BlackBerry or similar devices. ATTENDANCE: Attendance is very important for discussion, analysis, and understanding. You will be allowed to miss five classes. After that, you will be "charged" at the rate of five points per missed class. I mark you "absent" at the beginning of the class when I take attendance, and then change it to "late" if you come in after that time. However, I will not make this change for any student coming in later than 15 minutes after the beginning of class. Anyone who leaves class 20 or more minutes before the end of it will likewise be counted as absent. Five late arrivals equal one absence. ACADEMIC STANDARDS: You should be at Reading Level 98 in order to succeed in this class. (See your Compass Test scores to determine this.) If you are below that level, you are advised to enroll in Reading 88 and take care of your reading problems before attempting a literature course. Any test or research paper that is deemed to be significantly below the acceptable level of skills required for success at the college level will be scored no higher than D regardless of the content. In other words, if your ideas are good, but your written expression is bad, you will not get higher than a D on your tests. You can prevent some of these problems by allowing time for careful proofreading. "BATTLE BUDDIES": You will be required to select a "battle buddy" from this class to keep you informed in the event that you must miss classes. I will ask the name of your battle buddy at the end of the first week. CHILDREN IN THE CLASSROOM: Please arrange for childcare before coming to class. Children are not allowed in the classroom, per order of the WWCC President.
