In addition to becoming acquainted with the rudiments of good research, youll present your findings to your peers. Objectives: By the end of the course you will be able to Define a research problem Locate, collect, and evaluate research materials on-line and in the library Identify and use the MLA/APA documentations formats Learn how to take effective notes from source material Correctly integrate source material into your writing Summarize, paraphrase, and quote source material Write better arguments Compose analytical paragraphs Understand how not to plagiarize Present your research in a professional manner Assignments/Grading: Your work will consist of two research papers and a number of in-class and out-of-class assignments that constitute the steps in composing research papers. Near the end of the course you will present your second research paper to the class. Your final grade is tallied from points earned for your papers, finished assignments, and presentation. Attendance: Good attendance is one way to become more familiar with the ideas and methods covered in lecture. Poor attendance rarely allows for such familiarity. Success in a writing course is inextricably tied to good attendance. Late Work/Make-up Work: I accept one late writing assignment. The assignment loses 10% and must be turned in no later than a week after the original due date. No other late work is accepted. However, if you missed class on a day an assignment is given and it is to be completed the following day, you can on the day that you return to class make up that assignment with no point loss if you complete it overnight. So always check with me on returning from an absence to see if there is an assignment you can make up immediately. Plagiarism: You are expected to do your own work. If I determine that you have submitted the work of another as your own, you will be dropped from the class or, if past the drop date, you will be given an F final grade. If you assist one in the act of plagiarizing, you too will be dropped from the class, of if past the drop date, be given an F final grade. One of the major emphases of this Research Writing Course is identifying plagiarism in its many forms and learning how to ensure that ones own writing is free of it. Class Etiquette: Please show courtesy towards me and your fellow students by turning off and putting away cell phones, by coming to class on time and staying until the session is over. Please do not do homework for another course, do not open a laptop computer, a magazine, or another book; and do not listen to recorded music in my class. Chatting with another in class must be kept to a minimum. Disability Accommodations: A student with a documented disability may request accommodations by contacting Claudia Angus, Coordinator of Disability Support Services, at 527-4262 or by email at HYPERLINK "mailto:claudia.angus@wwcc.edu" claudia.angus@wwcc.edu.
