Students consider issues of structure, craftsmanship, aesthetics, and content. The course builds on other humanities courses by furthering exploration of design principles and ceramic techniques. It also emphasizes relationships, aesthetic possibilities and looks at the historical context of various art movements and the place of art in society. Students develop a greater understanding if their own creative and cognitive processes. Projects are designed to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Type of Instruction Used in This Course: (e.g., lecture, lecture/lab, clinical, competency based, field trips, TV or other). The course format is structured as a studio art lab, where students explore various art making techniques. Class sessions include mini-lectures, demonstrations, critiques, internet and library research assignments, in class writing assignments, field trips, discussion, video and power point presentations, gallery reviews, hands on studio practice, collaborative and group activities. Evaluation Devices: Critiques of process and product, feedback on progress notes, observation of competency with regards to technical skill and use of materials, and observation of idea development, analysis of final pieces both verbally and in writing. Students are also evaluated on attendance, class participation and conduct. Attendance Policy: Students are required to attend each and all classes and labs. Each lab is designed around a 2 hr block of time; students are required to spend at least 2-4 hrs per week outside of class sessions to become proficient in processes and complete projects. Supervised open lab times are available to students for working on projects. Testing Policy: Students will keep a notebook for research and writing projects to be turned in with their final portfolio. Students will receive grades throughout the quarter for individual and group critiques and will exhibit a final portfolio at the end of the semester of completed projects. Homework Policy: Students are required to spend at least 2-4 hrs per week outside of class sessions to become proficient in processes and complete projects. Supervised open lab times are available to students for working on projects. Students are expected to follow through on assigned reading, search internet sites related to various research topics, library research may also be assigned. Students are also responsible to undertake 3 independent gallery/studio visits outside of class as part of their research. Students may also be asked keep an idea/sketch journal. Grading Policy: Total points are earned in the following categories: 20% for class attendance, participation and clean up, 20% for class notebook which contains research, writing, gallery reviews, sketch/idea journal and class handouts, 20% for in-class critiques (5% each for two progress critiques and 10% for midterm) , and 40% for the final portfolio presentation of completed class projects. While the design and aesthetic qualities of the finished pieces, as well as technical resolution and complexity of ideas expressed are important in the evaluation of the work, process and progress are emphasized. In general grading is based on attendance, punctuality, participation and respectful conduct towards others. Students are graded on meeting deadlines, keeping a organized and up to date notebook. Grades depend on participation as a viewer, listener, and presenter at formal and informal settings, participation in critiques, independent work, conferences and constructive interactions with peers. Students must demonstrate a growing understanding of design fundamentals, terms and aesthetics. Grades also depend on students showing initiative, asking questions, craftsmanship, being open to suggestion, experimentation and discovery, and maintenance of a safe and clean work space. Learning Outcomes Expected of Students at the Completion of this Course: Students will be able to demonstrate a basic proficiency in and create works using basic clay, steel, plaster, and mixed media fabrication processes Students will acquire an understanding of the lost wax bronze casting process and simple mold making techniques. Students will begin to develop a visual language as it pertains to sculpture incorporating design elements and principles. Students will begin to explore the historical contexts and evolutions of particular art making processes and movements. Students will begin to identify their own creative processes and the relationship of their work to their environment. Students will demonstrate an understanding of basic sculptural terms. Students will complete a minimum of four projects that exemplify their understanding of process, aesthetics, craftsmanship, and materials as it pertains to the art of sculpture. MASTER COURSE OUTLINE SCULPTURE I Course Number: Art 167 Admin Unit: k5 Credits: 4 Clock Hours Per Week: 2 lecture, 4 lab Description: An introduction to basic sculptural art building processes, including but not limited to bronze casting, ceramic sculpture, mold making, steel fabrication, plaster casting and carving, earthworks, and mixed media assemblage. No prerequisite. Intended Skills and Outcomes: Assessment based upon the completion of sculpture projects and presentations (including a final portfolio/exhibition of resolved class projects), maintenance of a research/ sketch/ idea notebook, class and final critiques: demonstrating knowledge and skill related to art historical elements, the vocabulary of and for the sculptural arts, the basic principles of 3-D design, the roles of artist/sculptor and observer, and the materials and methods used in the execution of particular sculptural arts. !Mbu%7>Rdq{4 9 L #Sbi+MN\fqv~hlcfhKCJhlcfhK5CJhhK5CJhhKCJhhlcf5CJ: !>?bc%&>?{|3 4 8 9 gdK$a$gdK$a$gdKRShiG5#i !"#$%&''()*+AMNefuv$a$gdK":pK/ =!"#$%<@< NormalCJaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k(No List* z z z z+ !>?bc%&>?{|3489 R S hiG5#i !"#$%&'()*+AMNefuv0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0p0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ00ˀ0ˀ0ˀ00ˀ00ˀ00ˀ00ˀ00ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0000ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ0ˀ !>?bc%>{3489 R S @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@'7 D L S >C(Z[\fh:::::@>M@ @UnknownGTimes New Roman5Symbol3 Arial qhҙ&ҙ&], (>4)AxSubmittal date: 31 August 2005Technology ServicesTechnology Services Oh+'0o , H T `lt|' Submittal date: 31 August 2005L Technology ServicesL NormalTechnology Services2 Microsoft Word 11.1@F#@m@m],GnPICTmd ,, MSWD ,Times New Roman :.(baS-F) ub-)Am-F)0i-)ttal-)S -)d-F) a-)te:-)@ -) 31-F)I -)A-F)*u-) g-F)us-)8t-) -)2005-X)t -(w -(WWCC COU-F(>R-)+SE-)G -)SYLLABUS-F(/-)OUTLINE-( (+ -(nwC-F)*ou-)=rse-)K -)Title:-F) -) -F)B-)'e-F)ginning-) Sc-F)Iulp-)Kt-F)u-)re-X)- -(w -*CDepar-F)t-)me-F)Jn-) t-) P-)2r-F)e-)f-)i-F)x-):) -F)ARTt-t )v -
