Course focuses on problems in the organization of line, shape, value, space, and texture, with an emphasis on composition and presentation of black and white designs. This course also serves as an introduction to various studio practices and techniques (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, etc.) focusing on their application and history in the area of fine art. Type of Instruction Used: Lecture, lab, hands-on demonstration, videos, slides, gallery visits, survey of art books. Evaluation Devices: Instructor critique, class critique, quizzes, portfolio of completed projects. Testing Policy: Quizzes will be announced at least one day ahead. Homework Policy: Due dates will be given for specific assignments: any work not completed in class becomes homework. Outside class projects will be assigned for sketch diary. Class may entail research projects and gallery visits to be done outside class time. Late work will be automatically dropped one letter grade. Grading Policy: Students will be given letter grades on individual projects. Grades are determined by some of the following criteria: completion within designated time frame active participation in group activities and classroom discussions degree to which student has followed assignment instructions technical skill, craftsmanship and attention to detail demonstrated in assignment construction demonstration of understanding of assignment goals and the complexity of ideas articulated and imagination expressed in completed project students ability to communicate ideas verbally and use the vocabulary of design appropriately in class and individual critiques improvement demonstrated in any of the above areas as the quarters class assignments progress. cleanup and maintenance of classroom during project construction may also affect project grades and will be a consideration in the grading of the final class portfolio . Grade Breakdown: Students will receive a midterm grade at the beginning of the sixth week to apprise them of their standing in the class. Attendance and participation are 20% of the final class grade (This includes the completion of three gallery reviews) Class projects account for 60% of class grade Final class portfolio is 20% NOTE: Attending every class and completing the assignments to the minimum requirements will result in a C. This is an average grade. In order to earn a better grade you must do better than the minimum requirement. This may include, but is not exclusive to, extra work of good quality, reworking an assignment, extensive experimentation, ambitious yet realistic projects, etc. Quality not quantity is key. Attendance Policy: Students will be allowed ONE UNEXCUSED absence (each additional unexcused absence will drop your overall attendance and participation final grade - one letter grade). Absences for personal or family related reasons or illness may be excused, however, it is the students responsibility to inform the instructor about the absence. NOTE: Even if an absence is excused, the student is responsible for the work missed, as well as extra make up work designated by the instructor. Excessive excused absences may ultimately affect your final attendance and participation grade. Special Instructions: The use of cell phones is prohibited in this class. You are not allowed to do homework for other classes during this class All your work during the quarter will go into a portfolio book. Any extra time you have in class will be spent improving the layout of your book or completing the outside class assignments. If you have a disability and require special instruction or facilitation it is your responsibility to inform your instructor of this so that accommodations can be made. You may also contact LaDessa Smelcer who facilitates students with disabilities here at WWCC. Instructor Responsibility: I am here to help you achieve the objectives of this course. I will do my best to present this new material clearly and effectively and I will challenge and encourage you to think and work divergently. I will evaluate your progress fairly and provide input as to how to improve. I will also make myself available (within reason) to discuss any part of this course further. I became a teacher to share my experiences studying and practicing art. Given your honest and thoughtful effort you will leave this class with a solid, basic understanding of the foundations of art and its importance in our culture. Student Responsibility: You are expected to be an active learner. Develop an appetite for knowledge. Your education and what you learn from this class depends upon how much thought and effort you put into it. Keep an open mind, ask questions, and pursue new ways of working rather than retracing previous successes. This class is not a GPA booster. You will be expected to take notes, complete the readings and assignments on time and participate in discussions and critiques just as you would in any other class. I expect you to be interested in exploring the boundaries of your abilities. Seek out your weaknesses in order to strengthen them and use your strengths to push beyond your current capabilities. Each assignment has technical and conceptual parameters that will provide a challenge for those of you without an art background. Course Topics: This class will focus on the use of the formal elements of art: LINE, SHAPE, VALUE, TEXTURE, and SPACE. These will be combined with the principles of design: HARMONY, VARIETY, BALANCE, PROPORTION, DOMINANCE, MOVEMENT and ECONOMY. These concepts will be used to compose black and white designs. Learning Outcomes: The student will gain the ability to combine the elements and principle of art structure to produce effective designs. The student will gain the communication skills necessary to discuss and critique designs. The design skills learned will become the foundation for informing future art making activities. These activities may be of a fine art nature, such as painting or sculpture, or of a graphic art nature such as a brochure, poster, or web design. Supply List: Sketchbook Bristol Board Pencils Sharpie markers ( other pens and markers as needed) Eraser Black construction paper Scissors/ exacto knife Glue Portfolio Note: Instructor may ask you to obtain other materials for specific assignments Portfolio: You may need two separate portfolios to keep your work in. (Options will be discussed in class.) All course related materials, unless otherwise specified, should be neatly organized into these structures. This includes, notes, handouts, assignments, etc. One portfolio should take book form. It may be a sketchbook, journal, three-ring binder or some variation of these. It can serve as a place to record and develop project ideas. This is where you should record your outside class assignments. Your book will also include photos, magazine cutouts, Internet printouts, basically anything you can find related to your design studies. You should bring this book with you to every class, any spare time you have in class will be spent developing this book and its contents. t#@ 3 8 H { "2v&ANtF_FT #hPhzA/CJhPhzA/5CJhPhP5CJ5-FTjk"# 7 8 z { , o & FgdzA/$a$gdzA/#o v!"'UtuijEF & FgdzA/gdzA/ & FgdzA/ .
