Collection Development Policy

The primary function of the Walla Walla Community College Library is to support, enrich and implement the curriculum of the college. In order to accomplish this objective library staff continuously evaluate and acquire new materials and discard old and outdated resources.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Librarians rely on many sources when they make decisions for the purchase of new materials. These sources include reviews in journals and other references, requests and recommendations from faculty and others, and requests from students.
In order to accommodate a wide range of learning abilities and styles, resources chosen for the library reflect a diversity of viewpoints, language types and levels, and formats. Library acquisitions may include books, CDs, videotapes, DVDs, and online resources. The library also provides a small collection of recreational reading, listening, and viewing materials to accommodate those students who have no access to a public library. To ensure equal access to resources, the library provides materials which reflect the linguistic pluralism of the community. The Spanish language collection contains all resource formats and reflects the content of the larger English language collection.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR SELECTION

The reference librarian is primarily responsible for collection development, which includes selection of new materials. Other library staff members, including the director and the instructional services librarian, may participate in the selection process, especially when the library needs to purchase diverse formats or special collections.

The library subscribes to the following guidelines:

  • American Library Association. Library Bill of Rights
  • American Library Association. Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries: An interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights.
  • American Library Association. Diversity in Collection Development, An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights.

  • Revised October 2003
