Description
Entry-level student training in safe practices of fuel gas cutting/welding and shielded metal arc welding. Topics include equipment operation, industry practices, arc welding fundamentals, material preparation methods, basic electricity, metals and electrodes, shop work ethics, and print reading/layout procedures. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Apply safe cylinder handling and SMAW equipment practices.
  • Demonstrate proper set up, adjustment, and closing practices for joining and cutting steel materials.
  • Interpret shop drawings or prints to construct welding objective assemblies.
  • Identify and apply the correct process to assigned welding tasks.
  • Create welding objective assemblies according to specifications.
  • Evaluate final weld assembly according to AWS standards in publication D1.1.

  • Course Topics
  • Use and care for fuel gas welding and cutting apparatuses.
  • Portable and shop welding systems, grinders, vices, clamps, drills, files, air driven tools, punches, shears, and breaks.
  • Measuring methods.
  • Fabrication methods and material types.
  • Goal of welding certification on plate using an E-6010 electrode type.
  • Grinding equipment operation.
  • Blueprint reading and weld symbol principles.
