Master Course Outline Building Construction Course Number: FCA 152 Credits: 3 Hours per Quarter: 30 Lecture Hours:30 Description Overview of building construction engineering principles, fire and life safety concerns, hazardous materials/techniques, and related design factors. Significant course time concentrates on the hazards of various methods, techniques, components, and materials found in building construction. Special attention to lightweight construction techniques as well as strategic and tactical considerations for contemporary building design. Utilization of building construction knowledge for pre-planning fire potential is emphasized. Prerequisite: FCA 115 or instructor permission. Intended Skills and Attitude Outcomes A. Identify characteristics and requirements of the five principle building construction types and their performance under fire conditions. B. Identify and describe fire resistance, fire resistant assemblies, fire resistance and flame spread testing and ratings, and fire construction features which can contribute to the spread of smoke and fire. C. Identify important engineering principles of building design and their significance to safe and effective fire suppression decisions. D. Identify the characteristics of common structural materials and components and their performance under fire conditions. E. Identify the significant differences between lightweight and conventional building construction. F. Identify hazardous conditions created when wall, roof, and floor assemblies are exposed to fire conditions. G. Identify how fire may extend within a structure, identify options for fire control, and how to pre-plan. H. Describe strategic and tactical considerations associated with building construction types, materials, and components. I. Perform fire suppression duties with increased safety awareness.
