Description
Caring for children from families affected by substance abuse. Topics include values clarification, family characteristics, families in treatment, empowerment. Recommended: READ 088. Student may not earn credit for both ECE 255 and ED 255. |
Intended
Skills and Attitude Outcomes |
A. Students will recognize and manage how their own values may distort their perceptions and lessen their effectiveness in working with children and families affected by substance abuse.
B. Students will understand and apply the inference ladder to course materials and their own workplace situations.
C. Students will have a basic understanding of how family dynamics and child development are affected by substance abuse.
D. Students will understand the impact of chemical use in the family on members' self esteem and will understand the roles that family members often adopt to cope.
E. Students will have an understanding of the basic physiological mechanisms of substance abuse.
F. Students will have a basic understanding of the needs all children share, what child neglect may look like, and what impact it may have on individual children. Students will have a cursory understanding of brain development and how it may be affected by child neglect.
G. Students will demonstrate an increased awareness of the developmental, physical and medical consequences for children from families where substance abuse occurs.
H. Students will have basic knowledge about the causes, manifestations and challenges of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects and an expanded view of guidelines for working with these children in a child care setting. Students will discuss how living with FAS/FAE affects family dynamics.
I. Students will understand the nature of treatments available for chemical dependency and the affects of treatment on the family. Students will be aware of local resource for substance abuse treatment.
J. Students will demonstrate understanding of the child care provider's role in supporting families in treatment for chemical use.
K. Students will understand the ways child care settings can be modifies for children from families affected by substance use.
L. Students will explore and recognize how important a care provider's attitude is in creating a positive, stable environment for children.
M. Students will understand the provider's obligation to report suspected child abuse and neglect.
N. Students will learn techniques to handle anger in children.
