Description
Plan physical spaces appropriate to children's cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional development. Develop an understanding of the role of environments on children's learning and behavior, including schedules, materials, room arrangement, and center-based learning. Incorporate diversity in the environment is introduced and practiced. Recommended: READ 088. |

Skills and Attitude Outcomes |
A. Students will develop a personal understanding and philosophy of environments for young children
B. Students will gain knowledge of design principles, characteristics of space and facilities planning.
C. Students will gain understanding of the influence of the learning environment on cognitive, physical and social/emotional development.
D. Students will develop awareness of cultural factors in environmental planning.
E. Students will gain knowledge in environmental adaptations for special needs of children and families.
F. Students will gain experience in evaluating existing environments for infants, toddlers, preschool and primary age.
G. Students will learn and apply health and safety standards in environmental planning. This will also include state licensing requirements.
H. Students will be able to cooperatively plan and design a developmentally appropriate indoor environment for young children.
I. Students will be able to cooperatively plan and design a developmentally appropriate outdoor environment for young children.
