Introduces students to the elements, art and discipline of playwriting, by exploration of established works and creation of original one-act plays, scenes and monologues. By the course's conclusion, students will have completed a revised draft of a one-act play, and hear a scene from their plays read in a public performance. Designed as an introduction to the process of playwriting. The emphasis is on the exploration of a range of techniques and tools available to the playwright. Through the completion and discussion of a series of writing exercises the class will examine the various elements of playwriting. The way that these elements may be combined to create plays will be explored in the writing of several short plays, and ultimately, in the drafting a longer work.
