Master Course Outline Soils Fertility and Management Course Number: AGPR 202 Credits: 5 Hours per Quarter: 6 Lecture Hours:4    Lab Hours:2 Description Study of macro- and micronutrient uptake and utilization by plants and the fertilizer products used to supply different nutrients. Topics include soil conservation, erosion control practices, and utilization of soil survey reports. Prerequisite: AGPR 201 or instructor permission. Intended Skills and Attitude Outcomes A. Ability to interpret soil pH relationships based on soils cation exchange capacity and relate this to form and availability of nutrients. B. Ability to read and interpret soil test reports and make recommendations to include calculating the cost of fertilizer applications. C. Knowledge of the physical processes involved in soil loss by erosion. D. Knowledge of land use capability classifications. E. Ability to outline the nitrogen cycle in soils and recognize forms of nitrogen in plant and soil and mobility of each form. F. Knowledge of the need for fertilizer phosphorus. G. Knowledge of the need for potassium fertilizers and the forms of potassium in the soil. H. Knowledge of soil-fertilizer sulfur relationships. I. Knowledge of micronutrient needs of specific crops and availability dependence on soil pH. J. Ability to identify fertilizer products as to general types and knowledge of where each would be used to the greatest advantage. K. Ability to read and interpret a soil or plant tissue test analysis report and make fertilizer recommendations. L. Knowledge of the use of organic materials in a fertility management program.
