Description
Provides an understanding of soil structure and composition as related to temperature, water, and other environmental controls. Emphasizes studying soils from a land use and management perspective. Lab work required. |
Intended
Skills and Attitude Outcomes |

B. Ability to recognize the structure of rocks and minerals and knowledge of their relationship to soil formation and use.
C. Knowledge of the role of organic matter in soils.
D. Ability to classify soils texturally using a textural triangle and knowledge of soil porosity and bulk density.
E. Knowledge of water relationships in soil.
F. Knowledge of soil temperature changes at different depths throughout the seasons.
G. Knowledge of common gases in the soil and their diffusion patterns.
H. Ability to describe base-saturation, base-cycling, and how they can be altered through management.
I. Knowledge of principle cations present in the soil.
J. Knowledge of the multi-segmented process of soil formation and development.
K. Ability to utilize the taxonomic system for soil classification and knowledge of the distribution of soil orders in the U.S.
