Master Course Outline Weed Biology and Identification Course Number: AGPR 105 Credits: 5 Hours per Quarter: 60 Lecture Hours:4    Lab Hours:2 Description Introduction in weed science to provide an understanding of the principles and methods of controlling weeds, use and development of herbicides, methods of application and rate calculation, sprayer components and calibration, and practical knowledge of plant and seed samples of weeds common to the Pacific Northwest. Intended Skills and Attitude Outcomes A. Ability to identify a plant or seed sample by its common name utilizing morphological characteristics and to classify it by life cycle. B. Ability to perform calculations to determine rate and dosage of herbicides according to label recommendations. C. Ability to calculate costs of controlling weeds to a dollar per acre basis. D. Knowledge of competition factors of weeds to crops. E. Knowledge of the means of spread or dispersal of selected weeds. F. Ability to develop an integrated weed control program that will adequately control weed population. G. Ability to classify herbicide application methods and to select the proper time for application. H. Ability to identify the type of formulation for a herbicide when given a sample of the product and the label. I. Knowledge of the mode of action for surfactants and the reasons for use. J. Ability to identify the component parts of a sprayer. K. Knowledge of safe handling and use of herbicides. L. Knowledge of herbicide resistance in plants. M. Knowledge of laws regarding pesticides and herbicides. N. Knowledge to successfully complete the applicator certification requirements for Washington State.
