Description
Explore the historical, cultural, and biological development of growing up female. Also examined are the social and psychological perspectives of female identity, traditional and non-traditional roles, values, sexuality and orientation, dependency, emotions, physical and mental health issues, victimization and the changing perception of femininity and masculinity. Student may not earn credit for both PSYC 139 and WST 139. Recommended: READ 088 or higher. Formerly PSY 139. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
Describe the socialization process that encourages boys and girls, and women and men, to behave differently from each other.
Describe how women are relatively invisible in many important areas of culture including: the study of history, the classroom, world of work, and in government.
Explain that the psychological differences between men and women are small and inconsistent.
Discuss and demonstrate sensitivity to stereotypical views of women and their roles in society.
Develop an awareness of the wide variation among women in their psychological characteristics, life choices, and response to biological events.
