Description
Focus is on industry practices involving pipe welding and welder certification. Topics include welding procedures, specifications, preparation of test samples, testing, and acceptance standards. Prerequisite: WELD 153 or instructor permission.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Identify the major certification agencies, requirements and procedures, and demonstrate ability to select the proper test for a given welding setting.
  • Define testing mechanics, physical properties, inspection criteria, and demonstrate these to welder skill requirements and test preparation standards.
  • Demonstrate welding, section, prepare, and test metal sections for both tensile and bend testing.
  • Complete certificate testing and welding procedure specification forms.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reading welding shop blueprints/drawings.
  • Recognize acceptable and unacceptable welding practices/conditions.

  • Course Topics
  • Use and care for fuel gas welding and cutting apparatuses
  • Portable and shop welding systems, grinders, vices, clamps, drills, files, air driven tools, punches, shears, breaks
  • Measuring tools and methods
  • Fabrication systems and material types
  • Students are expected to cut, prepare and weld samples on steel plate and pipe according to the specified lessons described on shop drawings
  • Shielded metal arc welding electrode types and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding applications
  • Pipe welding section of Print Reading textbook
  • Print reading and weld symbol principles
