Description
Introductory course for students wishing to learn Spanish as a second language. Provides a foundation for practical interpersonal communications. Topics include pronunciation, basic grammar, reading, writing, and an introduction to Hispanic culture. To be taken in sequence or with written consent of the instructor. Prerequisite: SPAN& 122 or instructor permission. Formerly SPAN 103, Spanish III. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE: Students will acquire Spanish communication skills and will be able to demonstrate competence in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Emphasis will be placed on basic interpersonal communication. A final oral proficiency interview will be conducted, based on ACTFL standars and O.P.I. criteria. (Communication)
CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING: Mexico's language and culture will be studied. Students will have regular opportunities to interact in English and Spanish with Latino students who are leaning English as a second language. Students will be able to articulate principal areas of difference where American and Latino cultures interface. (Diversity)
LINGUISTIC EXPERTISE: Students will gain greater understanding of the construction and use of Spanish and English and demonstrate an increased grammatical and syntactic competency in both languages. (Lifelong learning)
