Description
Designed to build self-confidence in the college reader who wants to improve vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. This course is taught by lecture, group discussion, and guided practice. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate an understanding of the process of reading for academic information
Utilize critical thinking to question ideas, compare and contrast viewpoints, and arrive at meaning
Monitor comprehension
Build vocabulary through context clues and recognizing word part meanings
Demonstrate how to use previewing, purpose-setting, and questioning
Demonstrate appropriate marking of college level material
Summarize and respond to what you read
Appreciate the connection between reading and writing
Appreciate and employ different reading strategies for different academic texts such as literature pieces, textbooks, essays, and academic articles

Course Topics
Finding topic, main idea, and supporting details in academic texts
Learning to write summary outlines and personal responses to academic texts
Considering world viewpoints from news sources (like Newsweek magazine) and from the text (a collection of alternate viewpoints)
Vocabulary study using words from news weekly (Newsweek)
Literature study (non-American short stories and a non-American novel)
