Description
Designed to build self-confidence in the college reader who wants to improve vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. This course is taught by lecture, group discussion, and guided practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the process of reading for academic information
  • Utilize critical thinking to question ideas, compare and contrast viewpoints, and arrive at meaning
  • Monitor comprehension
  • Build vocabulary through context clues and recognizing word part meanings
  • Demonstrate how to use previewing, purpose-setting, and questioning
  • Demonstrate appropriate marking of college level material
  • Summarize and respond to what you read
  • Appreciate the connection between reading and writing
  • Appreciate and employ different reading strategies for different academic texts such as literature pieces, textbooks, essays, and academic articles

  • Course Topics
  • Finding topic, main idea, and supporting details in academic texts
  • Learning to write summary outlines and personal responses to academic texts
  • Considering world viewpoints from news sources (like Newsweek magazine) and from the text (a collection of alternate viewpoints)
  • Vocabulary study using words from news weekly (Newsweek)
  • Literature study (non-American short stories and a non-American novel)
