Description
Designed to improve how ably students utilize reading strategies to improve their overall comprehension. It reinforces skills in recognizing and using information selectively, increasing critical thinking about reading material, and increasing overall reading speed to better meet college reading demands. Prerequisite: Appropriate placement score or by successful completion of READ 078. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate an understanding of the process of reading for academic information and utilizing critical thinking to make selective choices about the information
Build vocabulary through context clues and recognizing word part meanings
Recognize the main idea and supporting material of a reading (essay length)
Paraphrase material from readings to demonstrate comprehension
Summarize information using various concept maps including Venn diagrams, flow charts, and basic outlines
Recognize fact from opinion in print and internet sources
Increase reading speed from the time the student entered the course to when they exit
