Description
Encourages and supports improvement of basic reading, comprehension, and study skills. Develops an understanding of the reading process and appreciation for the importance of reading both for pleasure and personal growth. Prerequisite: Entrance by placement exam. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
Develop a greater understanding of the reading process
Demonstrate a familiarity with the use of P.Q.R.S.T and other reading strategies
Learn to recognize vocabulary in context and improve skill in dictionary use
Improve comprehension by practicing fundamentals of text analysis, including identifying transitions, paraphrasing, summarizing, writing responses to text-related questions, and locating and outlining main ideas and supporting details using graphic organizers
Demonstrate the ability to read self-selected books independently with improved concentration, confidence, and fluency
Improve basic research skills utilizing the library and the Internet to search for information more effectively
