Description
Explores the flow of information in a medical office. Electronic Medical Record, a scheduling program, Office Hours, and MS Word software programs are utilized to process information and produce typical medical office documents, financial records, and insurance claims. Prerequisite: Admission to the Medical Assisting program. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
Schedule and manage appointments
Given a final simulation that spans a two-week office time frame, the student will utilize Office Hours software to demonstrate their ability to accurately and efficiently: 1) Schedule patient appointments with various doctors and time frames; 2) Reschedule/cancel appointments as needed; 3) Schedule physician breaks; 4) Search for an appointment; 5) Create a recall list; and 6) Print appointment schedules
Schedule inpatient and outpatient admissions and procedures Given a final simulation that spans a two-week office time frame, the student will utilize Medisoft software to demonstrate their ability to accurately and efficiently: 1) Preregister patients into database; 2) Input authorization, referral, and admissions data; 3) Create cases; and 4) enter encounter information including procedures, diagnoses, and charges/receipts.
Organize a patient's medical record and file medical record Paper: Given a practice packet, student will demonstrate ability to gather and assemble patient information forms and medical documentation into an accepted medical record format and accurately file the record. Electronic: Student will demonstrate their ability to maintain an accurate database of individual patient medical cases.
Perform Bookkeeping Procedures Electronic: Given a final simulation that spans a two-week office time frame, the student will utilize Medisoft software to demonstrate their ability to accurately and efficiently: 1) Enter patient transactions; 2) Post insurance payments and adjustments from RAs; 3) Create patient statements; and 4) generate reports as needed including: day sheets, practice analysis reports, patient and insurance aging reports, patient ledgers, collection reports, and customized reports. Paper: Given a practice packet student will demonstrate their ability to accurately maintain a paper-based accounting record system including: 1) preparation of bank deposits; 2) posting of entries, adjustments, NSF checks and collection agency payments; 3) performing A/R and billing and collection procedures; and 4) processing credit balances and refunds.
Complete Insurance Claims Forms
Electronic: Given a final simulation that spans a two-week office time frame, the student will utilize Medisoft software to demonstrate their ability to accurately and efficiently create HIPPA 837 claims and submit to a clearinghouse.
