Description
An introduction to basic concepts of transcultural competency in Nursing and Allied Health with a focus on the applied aspects of cultural difference. Also examines how different cultural communities relate to health care in terms of behavior, attitude, and policy and how these are transformed into practices and standards in the medical community, impacting quality of service and producing a given outcome. Prerequisite: Appropriate placement score or grade of C or higher in ENGL 097; or instructor permission. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate a general, global understanding of cultural difference and its application to Nursing and Allied Health (Bennett Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity).
Demonstrate a perspective of American notions of diversity and cultural difference and how they apply to one's health community.
Conduct a cultural self-audit and with assistance gauge the elements of one's personal cultural in light of one's future profession, Nursing and Allied Health (Hardiman Self-Identity Model).
Adapt cross-cultural concepts to Nursing and Allied Health.
Explore how communication and language affect transcultural success in the Nursing and Allied Health fields.
Examine real, critical incidents and apply concepts learned to the Nursing and Allied Health professions.
