Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Basics II

Description
Explores the basics of calibrating trade instruments, environmental management of refrigerants and refrigeration oils. Labs will include window air conditioners, PTAC and PTHP operation, recovery, evacuation and charging techniques in the lab, use of digital temperature meters and gauge manifold to determine operating parameters. Students will learn electrical related components, read and draw schematics, wiring related to the NEC, use of DMM to measure Ohms and volts, and ammeter to read current, will be covered in the lab with emphasis on normal operating parameters and troubleshooting. Prerequisite: EST 100 or instructor permission.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Describe or demonstrate calibration of common trade instruments.
  • Describe proper refrigerant recovery process in protecting the ozone layer.
  • Demonstrate maintenance and proper use of vacuum pumps.
  • Demonstrate charging of refrigeration systems using different industry methods.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of environmental refrigerant management by passing core and one or more types of EPA Certification exam.
  • Describe installation procedures for window air conditioners, relate areas of the NEC applicable.
  • Describe the heating and cooling cycle of a heat pump and identify the components.
  • Draw a ladder schematic of a basic window air conditioner and heat pump to include electrical legend.
  • Measure electrical and temperature readings associated with normal operation of window air conditioners.
  • Use of pressure, temperature, superheat, and subcooling as a troubleshooting tool.
  • Measure ohm balance of a compressor and determine if it is within normal parameters.
  • Measure voltage and current of an AC unit and determine if it is in parameters.
  • Identify the types of motors used in window air conditioners for the compressor and fan motors.
