Description
Surveys selected women writers across time and cultures with a focus on women as authors and characters. Time period covered ranges from the 18th to the 21st century. Student may not earn credit for both ENGL 251 and WST 251. Course taken prior to fall 2010 also accepted for diversity requirement. Formerly LIT 251. Recommended: READ 088 or higher.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to:
  • Interpret literature and evaluate the readings for authorial style, intent, theme, and characterization.
  • Define and employ appropriate literary terminology.
  • Evaluate the role of women in literature (both as authors and characters) and compare how those roles have shifted over time and across cultures.
  • Appraise the ways in which a writer's insight can be relevant culturally and personally.
  • Compose unified, coherent responses to the literature which appropriately cite from the text under consideration.
