Description
Parenting classes for students who are parents of children from birth to age five or from age six to twelve. This course will include video modules and group discussion about positive ways to parent young children.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Students will be able to identify feelings that their children are experiencing and express empathy.
  • Students will be able to implement strategies to gain children's cooperation.
  • Students will be able to identify and implement positive discipline strategies and alternatives to punishment.
  • Students will be able to identify ways to encourage autonomy in their children.
  • Students will be able to recognize and use appropriate praise and encouragement.
  • Students will be able to identify common roles in family dynamics and recognize healthy/unhealthy roles.
  • Students will recognize the importance of temperament in raising young children and explore their children's temperament.
  • Students will identify the four goals of mistaken behavior in children.
  • Students will identify ways to build self-esteem in young children.
  • Students will identify the key milestones of children's social and emotional development.
  • Students will identify the key milestones of early literacy and language development in children.
  • Students will identify strategies for enhancing literacy development in young children.

  • Helping children deal with their feelings, engaging cooperation, alternatives to punishment, encouraging autonomy, praise, freeing children from playing roles, understanding young children, understanding young children's behavior, building self-esteem in the early years, listening and talking to young children, helping young children learn to cooperate, discipline for young children, young children's social and emotional development, promoting early literacy for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
