Description
A study in the relationship-based professional development methods and principles involved in early childhood education mentoring and leadership development. Emphasis is on the role of experienced early childhood education teachers, adult educators and other professionals who work in roles as mentors, coaches, consultants and collaborators facilitating the professional development of teachers of young children. With the information necessary to open, operate, and manage child care centers and early learning programs that meet licensing, accreditation and other quality standards, the skills taught in these modules are also transferable into the fields of parent education and family support. Intended Learning Outcomes
Explain the purpose of mentoring, the qualities of an effective mentor and identify relationship-based professional development startegies and models.
Describe the role of the supervisor, coach, or consultant as well as the role of a mentor or collaborator.
Support emerging mentors and leaders from underrepresented groups by partnering with early childhood leaders in a local community.
Identify and use appropriate observation and assessment techniques to gather infomration for developing teacher, program and/or other professional goals.
Identify, facilitate and evaluate effective communication.

Differences and similarities in values, goals and roles associated with mentoring, collaborative teacher-researcher partnerships, coaching, consultation, supervision and evaluation.
Skills for effective relationship building and communication.
Adult learning theories and approaches applied to the mentoring relationship.
Collaborative inquiry methods in professional learning communities.
Observation, dialogue, goal setting, implementing a plan, critical reflection and evaluation strategies for mentor-teacher partnerships.
