Develop competence in the use of various types of literature, criteria for selecting children's books, and methods to provide literary experiences with young children. Introduction to creative art experiences for young children. Introduction to activities that assist in development of a young child's muscle coordination, awareness of body image and movement, and physical development. Experience literature, art, music and movement from various cultures. Recommend: READ 088

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Evaluate children's literature and select appropriate books for a child's developmental level and interests.
  • Demonstrate how to include multicultural books and recognize bias.
  • Plan and use at least three different methods of experiencing literature with children, i.e. storytelling, flannel board, dramatic play, drawing, poetry, and puppets.
  • Discuss the various art curricula that are appropriate for children.
  • Explain the developmental sequence of the study of art.
  • Plan and implement creative art activities, which supplement formal school experiences, using inexpensive and readily available materials.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of basic art materials, techniques and equipment.
  • Describe the four different domains: physical, social, cognitive and emotional and the purpose of movement within each domain.
  • Describe movement's role in the musical and creative development of the young child.
  • Describe how to use movement and music for transitions.
  • Describe what is involved in movement programs: the elements, locomotor skills, nonlocomotor skills, manipulative skills, educational gymnastic skills.
  • Create a lesson plan using a variety of music and movement themes and progressions
  • Integrate movement and music education through other curriculum areas or areas of study.
