Description
Develop competence in the use of various types of literature, criteria for selecting children's books, and methods to provide literary experiences with young children. Experience literature from various cultures. Introduction to creative art experiences for young children. Topics include selection of literature, methods of providing appropriate literary experiences for children, storytelling, props and dramatic play as well as planning, presentation and supervision of creative art activities and materials. Recommended: READ 088. Student may not earn credit for both ECE 232 and ED 232.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Evaluate children's literature and select appropriate books for a child's developmental level and interests.
  • Demonstrate how to include multicultural books and recognize bias.
  • Identify authors and illustrators of quality children's books.
  • Plan and use at least three different methods of experiencing literature with children, i.e. storytelling, flannel board, dramatic play, drawing, poetry, and puppets.
  • Identify at least six types of literature and provide examples of each.
  • Discuss the various art curricula that are appropriate for children.
  • Practice cooperative learning activities and develop problem-solving abilities, questioning strategies and communication skills.
  • Explain the developmental sequence of the study of art.
  • Plan and implement creative art activities, which supplement formal school experiences, using inexpensive and readily available materials.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of basic art materials, techniques and equipment.
