Description
Provides student experience in an early care setting. The student integrates experience and knowledge of young children in planning and assisting as preschool teacher/preschool teacher's assistant. Topics include environments, curriculum evaluation, staff relationships, and code of ethics. Prerequisites: ECE 191 and instructor permission. Recommended: READ 088.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Observe and participate as a preschool teacher/preschool teacher assistant in an early childhood setting. Experiences will be documented in a journal.
  • Participate with children in the classroom. Students will document experiences in journal.
  • Assist in maintaining the physical environment in a safe and inviting atmosphere for children and teachers.
  • Accept supervision and direction from lead teacher and/or director in the classroom and from supervisory teacher from WWCC.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the NAEYC Code of Ethics. Be prepared to discuss in class.
  • Complete two observations in designated areas: 1) Special Education or ESL (English As A Second Language) classroom 2) Same grade level at different school.
  • Arrange two visits by supervising teacher to practicum classroom.
  • Maintain a confidential journal of the forty hours of lab experience including activities completed, observations, questions, reactions and discussions with child care center director and instructor.
  • Maintain a list of questions during the quarter and bring them to each seminar for discussion.
  • Complete weekly assigned readings.
  • Complete group research project and evaluations.
  • Develop awareness of the importance of commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
