Description
Will investigate key chemical concepts and principles using one or more of the following themes: chemical advances in civilization, chemical processes in food preparation, chemistry of crime, chemistry of the environment, chemistry of soils and gardening.[NS]

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Use balanced chemical equations to describe common reaction processes
  • Use the periodic table of elements to classify elements and predict periodic trends
  • Distinguish between ionic and covalent compounds (including biological macromolecules) and identify the role of these compounds
  • Use a basic understanding of atoms to describe common organic molecules
  • Distinguish between solutions, colloids, and suspensions
  • Identify and distinguish solids, liquids, and gases
  • Define pH and use the pH scale to explain specific observations
