Description
An introductory course in which students explore a variety of materials and projects that incorporate basic art vocabulary and principles. Emphasis on individual expression and freedom to create within structured assignments; focus on 2-dimensional media in black and white. No previous experience necessary. [HP]

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Apply visual thinking to achieve personal satisfaction in solving visual problems.
  • Show critical thinking skills by creating alternative solutions to visual problems.
  • Explain and apply major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to art.
  • Identify a variety of art media.
  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible use of media and information.

  • Art vocabulary
  • Art elements of line, shape, value, texture, and space
  • Art principles of balance, contrast, repetition, variety, and unity
  • Art media, both wet and dry
  • Uniting elements and principles of art for effective visual communication
  • Expressive potential of combinations of elements and principles
  • Expressive potential of art media (materials). May include graphite, paint, ink, collage, printmaking, scratchboard and mixed media.
  • Visual and critical thinking; practical application of art principles in organizing visual compositions
  • Ethical and responsible use of media and information
