Description
Introduction to the identification, life cycles, and control of insects and diseases common to crops in Washington. Focuses on the fundamentals of entomology and plant pathology, not on specific problems and their control in a given crop. |
Intended Learning Outcomes
Place insects into their proper order based on type, number, and arrangement of body appendages.
List the major body sections of insects.
Identify feeding habit of insects based on type of mouth parts.
Classify insects based on developmental stages and recognize the most damaging stage of development as related to crop damage.
Recognize and identify the stage of development to time of year and best time to apply control procedures for commercially important insects in selected crops.
Identify other commercially important non-insect invertebrates which are pests of crops.
Identify the causal agent as virus, bacteria, or fungi given the name of a field crop disease common to Washington State.
Classify fungi into their groups and determine what control methods to use for those diseases discussed in class.
Demonstrate knowledge of disease symptoms and proper time to apply control procedures for those diseases discussed in class.
Discuss the chemical groups for insecticides and fungicides and given a commercial product's name, place that product into the correct chemical group.
Identify those disease and insect pests which are considered economic problems at the present time, given a specific agronomic crop grown in Washington. (The crops discussed in this course will vary dependent upon background and interests of students.)
Identify the mode of action for insecticides based on their chemical group and method of entry into the insect body.
