Warriors Capture 3rd at NWAACC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Walla Walla Community College finished 3rd at the NWAACC Championships on Saturday after advancing to the Championship play in game. The Warriors opened the tournament with straight game wins over Chemeketa and Green River before falling to eventual Champions Mt. Hood on Friday evening 3-0. The loss dropped the Warriors into the 'loser's bracket' in the double elimination event and needing to win three matches to advance ot the final.

The Warrior's faced Spokane in the first match on Saturday and dispatched the Sasquatch 2-0 to elminate their Eastern rival. Walla Walla then battled through the #1 seed in the NWAACC and sent Columbia Basin home with a hard earned 2-1 defeat. An emotionally drained Warrior team then saw their season come to a close with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Clackamas.

Warrior Head Coach TIm Toon was pleased with the weekend's results and looking ahead to an exciting 2007 season, 'The match against Clackamas was what it was.  We spent everything we had beating CBC and couldn’t put enough quality on the court against Clackamas.'

'We came in ranked #4 in the NWAACC.  Taking home 3rd the 3rd place trophy and knocking Spokane and CBC out of the tournament capped a great season.'

'Our three sophomores led the way.  They have all had great careers at WWCC and have been very patient with the freshmen.  In the end, they all worked together to play some pretty good volleyball.'

'At the end of the Clackamas match, the freshmen vowed to train hard enough to get into the Championship match next year.  We’re going to have a very fun and exciting off-season and we’ll be one of the elite teams again next year.'

Warrior Jennifer Muzzall was named to the All-Tournament 1st Team while Sarah Rusch was named to the 2nd team for her performance.

Warriors Head into Tournament with high expectations

Walla Walla Community College heads into the NWAACC Championships this weekend with high expectations and the goal of defending their 2005 Tournament title. The Warriors open up play Thursday morning against #8 rated Chemeketa.

Stated Head Coach Tim Toon, 'Chemeketa is a tough first round draw.  They are a big team and block a lot of balls.  They also have three lefty hitters that create some unusual attack angles.  We haven’t played Chemeketa this season, but have seen them play several times.  When you watch them warm up, you’d guess that they are one of the best teams in the NWAACC.  When the matches start, they become very error prone.  I hope that pattern continues for at least one more match.'

Depending on the outcome of their first round game, Walla Walla will face Green River or Shoreline on either the winner's or loser's side of the bracket in the double elimination event. The Warriors handled #6 rated Green River late in October but have not faced Shoreline this Fall.

Coach Toon believes getting that first match in the books as a win is important to having a successful run in the tournament,' The key to this tournament is to stay on the winner’s side of the double elimination tournament.  No team has every come from the loser’s side of the bracket to claim the NWAACC title.  Our goal is to still be in the tournament on Saturday morning.  If we are playing on Saturday, we should bring home some hardware.'

'This has been a year in the NWAACC where there have been very few upsets.  Almost all tournaments have played out according to seed.  If that remains true, we’ll have a great tournament.'

Coach Toon looks at this tournament as a chance to continue what has been a successful run for Warrior Volleyball over the past three season. 'This has been a great season.  For the third year in a row, we are one of the elite teams in the NWAACC.  With 10 freshmen on our roster, next season looks very promising also.  But our 3 Sophomores are not yet ready to talk about next year.  They know what it takes to win an NWAACC Championship and want to get back to the Championship match.'

Walla Walla opens up play against Chemeketa on Thursday morning at 9:00am in Spokane.
