Description
A synopsis of safety and worker protection in the agricultural workplace and completion of course work leading to certification of the student as a pesticide application technician. Emphasis on agricultural operations, turf management technological changes and hazards associated with pesticide and fertilizer use.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Assess the forces within our society that influence worker safety issues
  • Demonstrate how technology removes hazards from the work environment
  • Identify work habits, practices and associated risks that have an impact on workers use of agricultural machinery
  • Examine how the information on Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and agricultural labels removes hazards from the work place
  • Apply a working knowledge of agricultural chemical safety
  • Examine basic first aid procedures related to agricultural chemical poisoning
  • Organize and implement an agriculture worker safety meeting and draft a safety plan for an agricultural site
  • Examine federal and state pesticide laws and identify laws that apply to certification
  • Identify and examine pesticide formulations
  • Examine how pesticides interact with the environment and identify the components of an integrated pest management program
  • Examine basic weed science principles and how to control weeds in agriculture, ornamentals and turf
  • Examine insect problems and disease science principles and how to control insects and diseases in agriculture, ornamentals and turf
  • Demonstrate the ability to pass the exam and qualify for a state pesticide applicators license
