WARRIORS TAKE HOME TITLE

The top-ranked Walla Walla Warriors cruised past third-ranked Chemeketa in Saturday's semifinal 4-1 while second-ranked Columbia Basin Hawks took down fourth-ranked Tacoma 3-2 in Saturday's other semifinal.

Columbia Basin's women looked for a repeat of last year's upset win over Walla Walla in the championships - and for 90 minutes it appeared that the Hawks held a slight offensive edge over the favored Warriors.

Overtime was a different story, however. Walla Walla attacked the Columbia Basin goal hard until the 94th minute when a corner kick was launched in front of a crowded Hawk goal box and Warrior sophomore forward Tahlia O'Loughlin collected it and drove in a five yard shot for the 1-0 sudden death OT winner.

The Warrior's title ended a four-year span in which Walla Walla's women's program has had to settle for a runner-up trophy at the championships.

JONES LEAD WARRIORS TO QUARTERFINAL WIN,

SEMIFINALS NEXT

By ROY ELIA

of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin

WALLA WALLA — Tahlia O’Loughlin scored in the eighth minute and fellow forward Justine Jones completed a hat trick with two goals in the final nine minutes of play Saturday afternoon to lead the top-ranked Walla Walla Community College women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Shoreline in an NWAACC quarterfinal match at Warrior Field.

WWCC improved its record to 19-1 and will advance to the conference semifinals next Saturday.

Both semifinal matches and Sunday’s championship and consolation tussles will be played at the StarFire Sports Complex in Seattle.

Shoreline’s season ended with a mark of 8-5-4.

O’Loughlin’s goal, her 10th of the season, came off a Dominique Alston assist at 7:25.

“That was a big goal for us,” WWCC coach Chad Bodnar said. “It was a goal of pure heart. She ran into the keeper and had the wind knocked out of her. Most players would have stayed away from that 50-50 challenge, but she ran through it and scored a great goal.”

The Warriors maintained their one-goal edge until Jones put away her first tally, assisted by Becky Ryerse, at the 36:35 mark of half one.

“She came out and sparked us,” Bodnar said of Jones, a reserve who had six goals in 2009 prior to her Saturday trifecta. “She peeled off the right side, Becky slotted a ball in behind the backs, and Justine tucked it in the left corner.

“We played as well as we’ve played all year in the first half,” said Bodnar, whose team outshot the Dolphins 13-0 in the opening 45 minutes. “We had good movement off the ball. We could have finished more chances, but I was pretty happy.”

Jones gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead by taking advantage of an Amanda Brusic assist at 81:40, then closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal, a chip with the left boot from 25 yards out on the right side, at 83:30.

“She was on fire today,” Bodnar said. “It’s great to see. That’s an attribute of this team — that we have a lot of kids that can finish chances.”

Walla Walla Community College outshot Shoreline 23-1. The Dolphins’ Michael Urbano recorded her team’s lone shot in the match — a try just inside the 18-yard box with 1:46 left that was stopped by Walla Walla keeper Jordan Simkins.

WARRIORS HAMMER HIGHLINE

The Walla Walla Community College women’s soccer squad put on a shooting clinic in an 8-0 romp against the overmatched Highline Falcons here Saturday afternoon at Bodnar Field. Using superior size, quickness and ball-handling, the Warriors kept the ball in the offensive end for most of the match. Walla Walla finished with 50 shots at the net — 29 in the first half. The Falcons responded with one shot late, their only attempt of the match. Backy Ryerse scored two goals while Kati Lucas, Jaymie Balcom, Amanda Brusic, Nicole Perry, Margo Hickman, and Justine Jones each added one.

“Games like these are pretty hard to play in sometimes,” Warrior coach Chad Bodnar said. “They sat a bunch of numbers inside the 18-yard box on us and didn’t want to come out and play. It was pretty much just us taking aim and finishing that first one or two goals, then we were pretty comfortable after that.

“I thought the girls did better in terms of finishing today,” he said. “We’ve been talking about the fact that we need to score and finish our chances so when we get down the road and we’re only getting six or eight or 10 shots (per game) and we need to finish we will.”

The Warriors improve to 5-1 on the season.

WARRIORS BEAT BELLEVUE

Forwards Margo Hickman and Katie Lucas scored two goals apiece, and fellow front-line mates Dominique Alston and Justine Jones added a tally each as WWCC rolled to a 6-0 victory over Bellevue at Warrior Field. Hickman got WWCC off to a good start with 6:49 gone in the first half. She used an assist off the boot of Teresa Lopez to give the Warriors a 1-0 edge.

Hickman set up Lucas for Walla Walla’s second goal with a minute left before halftime. The Warriors took the 2-0 advantage to intermission. Just two minutes into the second half, Hickman gave WWCC a 3-0 lead by making the most of a pass from Talia O’Loughlin, then delivered an assist to Lucas at 53:51 to balloon the margin to four.

An individual effort by Alston netted the Warriors’ fifth goal. She collected a pass in the midfield area, left Bellevue defenders in her wake, and knocked a goal-box shot past Bulldogs’ backup goalie Janelle Gobbato with 10:59 remaining. Jones contributed her marker just 23 seconds later to end the scoring.

“We killed the game off,” WWCC coach Chad Bodnar said. “The girls did well with that in the second half. We’re finishing in front of the goal. The girls have gotten better with their composure. It was good for us because we got a lot of looks.”

WOMEN FALL TO NORTHWEST

Visiting Northwest University managed just three shots and one goal Saturday afternoon during a women’s collegiate soccer match with Walla Walla Community College at Warrior Field. But the first-half marker proved the difference as the Eagles held on for a 1-0 triumph over the Warriors. Walla Walla’s best scoring opportunity came just minutes before Northwest tallied the match’s only goal.

Freshman forward Margo Hickman got off three point-blank shots inside the Eagles’ goal box. Her first try was stopped by Northwest goalkeeper Jessica Kane, the second was cleared off the line by an Eagles’ defender, and the last sailed over the cross bar.

“If you don’t finish, you’re not going to win games,” Coach Chad Bodnar said. “It was one of those days. We lost our composure toward the end of the game,” said Bodnar, whose team was called for 19 fouls compared to only eight for Northwest. “We’ve got a long week of training ahead.”Walla Walla plays its first match of the season against an NWAACC opponent on Saturday when it travels to Olympic.
